The New ATTACKread/spell™ PROGRAMME by Jean Richards
The ATTACK READING/SPELLING PROGRAMME has been a very useful, successful and economical scheme for some years, particularly for children with Special Educational Needs. It was originally compiled for small groups of severely dyslexic people aged 7 years to adult.
When ATTACK was used as a Whole School Spelling Programme this proved to be a most successful venture. The whole school, of 120 pupils, was divided into groups according to each pupil’s Spelling Age but with respect for their Chronological Age. Most of the staff were involved, whatever their specialist subject.
ATTACK TESTS are included to help you to group pupils correctly.
New ATTACK consists of 200 carefully structured lessons plus a Homework Sheet to reinforce each lesson.
NO LESSON PREPARATION is needed and all marking is done during the lesson.
EACH LESSON TEACHES many aspects of reading and spelling including:- 1. the sight recognition and spelling of 100 irregular words 2. the sight recognition and spelling of the days and months 3. the sight recognition and sound of over 100 letters and letter strings which make up phonetically regular words. 4. the construction of 2.000 phonetically regular words 5. the decoding of 2,000 phonetically regular words 6. the short term recall of a meaningful sentence 7. sequencing the words within that sentence 8. writing that sentence from memory using capital letters, full stops, speech marks and question marks, where appropriate. (at this point we do not attempt to use commas or apostrophes)
The New ATTACK READING/SPELLING PROGRAMME is complete in itself and needs no specialist equipment – just pencil/pen, file and file paper.
ADVANCED ATTACK, which consists of 100 prepared lessons, was developed as a continuation of the ATTACK READING/SPELLING PROGRAMME. ‘Irregular’ words are continued and other words in each lesson contain a common letter string. These lessons not only extend vocabulary but include the regular use of a dictionary and sentence construction.
